The Prisoner, the old insurrectionist
Nobody under forty remembers the Prisoner free. He has conspired against every regime France has had since the old kings, has been condemned many times, and has spent more of his life in cells than out of them. The cells made him a legend: the man no government can let walk the streets.
He is small, white-bearded and polite, and he believes in one thing, which he has written down in many forms: a determined minority must seize power and hold it until the people are ready. His disciples in Paris have kept his clubs alive for him. In March 1871 he was arrested again on the eve of the rising, and he has spent the Commune in a fortress, waiting.
