Raoul was born in 1891 in a Batignolles tenement that his grandmother never let him forget had burned in the Bloody Week. He left school at twelve for a bicycle repair shop and was taking apart steam engines at sixteen. At twenty he can make anything with a crankshaft run, and he cannot afford any of it.
Paris in his youth was the city of electric light, the iron tower and the cabarets of Montmartre, and his father still talked about the anarchist bombs that went off in cafés and in the Chamber itself. Raoul reads the anarchist papers without quite believing them. When a gang offered him more for one night's work on a stolen motor car than he earned in a month, he said yes before he asked what the car was for.
