Chapter 1 The Gilded Cage 1783 to 1789

La Corneille

Nobody agrees on who La Corneille is. Some say a ruined noblewoman, some a former actress of the boulevard theatres, some a man who lets the city believe he is a woman. All agree on the mask, of black lacquered leather with a beak, and on the voice behind it, low and patient.

The Brotherhood of the Mask grew out of the old smugglers' and receivers' networks around the customs barriers, which the new wall of the tax farmers made rich overnight. La Corneille gave them a cause and a discipline: cells that know only one other cell, passwords that change with the saints' days, and a rule against keeping anything that could be found.
