Maximin Vérac
Maximin Vérac is the son of a ruined glovemaker from the Dauphiné. He taught himself the law in a solicitor's back office, by candle ends, and came to Paris in 1789 with one good coat and a reputation for never accepting a gift, which earned him his nickname.
He speaks quietly and at length, and he is very hard to interrupt. In the clubs he became the voice of the sections and the poor faubourgs, and in the Committee he became something more: the man who decided which names went on the lists. He believes that a republic of virtue must be defended by fear until virtue can stand on its own. He does not say when that will be.
